Mission Statement

Turkey foot, otherwise known as Big Bluestem, can reach over 10 feet in height.

So why should you care about the Flint Hills or the tallgrass prairie? More importantly, at least to me, why should I spend all this time writing a blog about it? Good questions.

I’m still trying to figure this out, but I am sure there will be good, positive answers. The Flint Hills of Kansas have long impressed me by their beauty and quiet power. The more I learned about the tallgrass prairie ecosystem and how the Flint Hills have preserved that tallgrass prairie, the more I am convinced of the Flint Hills importance. So I am sure the Flint Hills and the tallgrass they protect are worth your time and mine.

So that’s what this blog will be about, showing you why you should care about the Flint Hills and giving me the chance to put into writing what I feel about this region. Along the way, we will look at a lot of subjects. There are many places to visit and activities to do in the Flint Hills. I’ll talk about a few of them. The Flint Hills have also inspired a lot of art and photography. I’ll highlight some of the best artists who have captured the landscape on a canvas or through a lens. There are many people who have learned to live in and with the Flint Hills, validating the hills’ importance through their efforts. I want to get to know more of them. There are authors who have done a better job than I could ever hope to do at finding the words to capture the beauty and significance of the hills. I’ll steal their words as my own.

Just kidding! But I do want to show their work and give them all the credit.

And one more thing, the Flint Hills have been in the news recently, from National Geographicto local newspapers in the region. I want to talk about those stories when I can.

I appreciate your input. Especially if you like what I do. But even if you don’t, please speak up.

I don’t know where this adventure in writing will take me. I just know the Flint Hills are worth it. So let’s have fun.

Thanks. So, I guess this means I’m going to have to write stuff.

    Dennis,
This will be very interesting to get to know the Flint Hills….but your blog would be perfect if you would throw in recipes. Some with grass, some with raisins, etc.

    Sara,
Grasshoppers and buffalo eat grass. I eat “salads.”

Of course, everything is better with raisins, especially salads.
