Don, I have just finished reading some of your past history on "Smoke- gets- in- your- eyes". I have take a 3 month leave of absence from my radio program, but plan to return to the radio the 1st Thursday of April. Had some necessary surgeries to take care of. Having read your articles, I would like to borrow some of them for my April program. We are heavy burners here in Greenwood County and the program should be of interest to everyone in the area. Thanks in advance--Phil Johnston

First, thanks for your visit to my post "Five Feet High and Rising" in which I mentioned tallgrass prairie. I truly appreciate the visit and your comment, and even more, the link to your site here.

I found this post very interesting, both in its present day reporting and the excerpts from the journals of the past.

I look forward to reading more of your archived posts and to visiting some of the other sites mentioned here.

Deborah,
Thanks. I too find the historic journals fascinating. Part of the appeal of the tallgrass prairie is the connection it offers to our past. It's one of the few places you can find a vista that is very similar to what the first explorers and early European pioneers saw in the 18th and 19th centuries. The journals add to that connection as I try to imagine life on the prairie in the early 1800's. It all helps me connect to this landscape.
