I found your blog while scouring the web for prairie stuff. It is something that I do often. I, too, live in the Tallgrass of the Flint Hills. Just wanted to say how wonderful it was to read that someone else delights in the procession of colors as they ripple past.

I am relatively new to blogging, and trying to figure it all out. I might try to link, or whatever it is, to your blog. I don't have any readers, I am still mustering my courage. Anyway, I will continue to read your stuff. Any friend of the grass is a friend of mine.

Thanks to all for the comments about trees. Contrary to what some of my friends think, I do like trees. One of my favorite classes back in my days at K-State was woody plant materials. Trees do play an important role in every ecosystem, even in the prairie, where trees line the rivers, creeks, and streams, forming gallery forests. But the prairie is disappearing and trees -- mostly red cedars -- are growing where they shouldn't.

P.S. I hope folks click on the names above and visit Glenn's, Scott's, and Brad's Web sites. Glenn has great information about sustainable agriculture in places that need it and Scott and Brad have some GREAT prairie photography.

Hi Dennis, came across your site from a link on Scott Beans blog and glad I did.
Obviously from what I do in photography I love nature including trees, but you make a very valid point to which I agree. The vast majority of people know trees, (even some folks in New York City!) but not many even know a tallgrass prairie exists or recognize it even if they have driven through the Flint Hills, and I'm right there with you, it ticks me off! Everyone wants to be associated with the "Saving the Rain Forest" campaign because it is recognizable by the general public. It's just a sad state of affairs when the general public is so ill informed and some if not most are just down right selfishly dumb.
Keep up the important and great work Dennis.
